How about Spring Cleaning? 8 Tips to Get Ready for Spring

Deep cleaning is a phrase that should be synonymous with spring. This is the season when most homeowners clean all those out of reach areas that don’t get cleaned regularly.

By JCS

As winter comes to an end, we have a few tips that you can use to prepare your home for the warmer seasons. Read on for some of our best spring-cleaning ideas.

1. Thoroughly Clean Your Carpets, Curtains, and Upholstery

A home’s carpets, curtains, and upholstery rarely get a deep cleaning so these should be your top priority. The easy way out would be to call in a professional cleaner. They have equipment and chemicals that make an easy job of cleaning carpets and upholstery without causing any damage.

In case a professional cleaner isn’t an option for you, then you can clean these items by yourself. Curtains can be washed in a washing machine, but make sure to abide by the washing instructions. Some can shrink considerably if put in the dryer.

To clean your carpets and upholstery you will need a carpet cleaner and shampoo. Begin by testing out your cleaning supplies on a hidden area of the carpet and upholstery to ensure that they won’t get damaged. After a test run, you can then clean all your carpets and upholstery.

Move your furniture slightly to reach hidden and covered areas. Once you finish cleaning, place wax paper at the bottom of your furniture’s feet to protect your clean carpet and floors. This prevents water from seeping into the furniture while the carpet dries. Leave your windows open for a day or two to allow the carpet and upholstery to dry.

2. Polish Your Floors

Spring is like a second new year and is the perfect time to polish or buff your floors. This keeps them looking great while protecting them against wear and tear. For wooden floors, move way your furniture then apply a wood cleaner to clean the floors.

Finish the wooden surfaces with a wax coating that will leave the floors looking fresh and protected. For regular floors, use a wash and wax cleaner that will clean, shine as well as seal your surfaces. Non-wood floors can simply be deep cleaned and buffed to make them shine.

3. Wash All Vertical Surfaces

Take advantage of the time set aside for spring cleaning to thoroughly wash all your walls, doors, cabinets, and baseboards. Wash your vertical surfaces using a sponge dipped in a soapy solution. Make sure to scrub away at any stubborn stains.

The walls can then be rinsed off with a cloth that has been dipped in warm water and wrung. Use a mop or a secure ladder to reach high surfaces.

4. Do a Deep Cleaning on Your Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures

Ceiling fans, chandeliers, and other light fixtures can get very dusty because they are hard to reach and rarely cleaned.

If you have complicated lighting, you could ask your electrician to help you dismantle the fixtures and clean them. Otherwise, a simple step ladder and a cleaning cloth are all you need to give your fixtures a deep clean.

5. Clean the Backs of Your Fridge and Oven

The backs and bottoms of your fridge and oven accumulate a lot of dirt and debris because these items are often too heavy to move frequently. Disconnect the equipment from the power source and then get help to move them a few steps away from their usual location. Use warm soapy water to clean the floor and the walls behind and under the fridge and oven.

For the fridge, vacuum the condenser coils located at the bottom back of the fridge. These coils collect a lot of dust and lint and can cause the fridge to malfunction. You can use a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to suck out the dust.

6. Take Time to Clean Your Windows

Windows tend to lose sparkle during the year. Dedicate some of your spring cleaning time to clean your windows. If possible, get a window cleaner with a long handle that has a microfiber sponge on one side and a squeegee on the other side.

Dip the microfiber scrubber in warm soapy water and wash the windows in an “S” pattern hitting all the corners. You can then dry out the windows from top to bottom using the squeegee. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe down any corners that are unreachable by the squeegee.

In case you don’t have a squeegee tool you can wash the windows down with a sponge dipped in warm soapy water and then rinse them with a microfiber cloth dipped and wrung out of clean warm water.

7. Change and Wash Bedding

Most households wash their sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers about once a week. Pillows, comforters, and mattresses, on the other hand, don’t get cleaned as much, even though they accumulate a lot of dust and germs.

Wash your pillows and comforters in your washing machine with a disinfectant. Be sure that you follow all the special care instructions. To remove all traces of detergent run the items through two rinse cycles. Air-dry your pillows and comforters to prevent damaging them.

For your mattress always use a mattress protector to keep away dirt and stains. To deep clean your mattress vacuum it to remove surface dirt. You can then deodorize it by sprinkling baking soda or a commercial deodorizer on the mattress and allowing it to sit for 24 hours.

Vacuum the mattress again to remove the deodorizer. Disinfect the mattress by spraying it with a bleach solution or commercial disinfectant and then wiping it down. Allow the mattress to dry outside in the sun before putting it back on the bed.

Remember to flip your mattress for a better night’s sleep.

8. Organize and Declutter

Decluttering is a spring deep cleaning tip that can go a long way in freshening up your home for the new season. Get rid of all the clothes that you and your family no longer need.

Other items such as unused toys, books, and anything that is no longer useful can be donated to charity or thrown away. The space and peace of mind created by decluttering will help you start the spring season with a lighter mood.
